How to Use Blogging in Learning

In his post Stephen Downes recommends that instructors lead by example. “Before requiring students to blog, instructors should lead by example, creating their own blogs and adding links to interesting resources and commentary on class topics. This not only produces a useful source of supplemental information for students, it creates a pattern and sets expectations for when students begin their own blogging.”

What other suggestions did Stephen Downes mention in his blog that you think would apply to you and your students?

  1. Since mine is not the traditional classroom, the tools I use to teach are limited. I would have to say that, right now, presentation software, or perhaps the program used by you to create your lessons would be the best tool that I have found to use. My "students" would be instructors who have problems accessing our data reporting site, or using and submitting the attendance spreadsheets.

  2. As a tutor to students preparing for the GED, particularly helping with math, it's not clear to me yet what technology tools may be appropriate for my students. Certainly, easy and reliable access to a computer would be the first step, unless there are tools they could access from their phones. I think videos on YouTube that describe math concepts or explain math vocabulary would be valuable for the students I work with.

  3. As a program director, I have the responsibility of being the instructional leader. As such, I really am challenged to find ways in which to touch as many learning styles as possible. I am looking forward to learning how to integrate technology into our teaching and learning. So many of our learners were not successful in the K-12 system because it was impossible for teachers to teach to all learning styles. Technology allows us to reach many of these students in the ways in which they learn. Although it will be a challenge getting our teachers on board, I think it will be well worth the effort on behalf of our learners.
